Religious people often express puzzlement at the idea that atheists could have any ethics whatsoever without relying on the mandates of a supernatural being to tell them what to think. We know that atheists are perfectly capable of being thoughtful, morally upstanding people — and that’s what I’m trying to demonstrate here. Each Sunday, I (do my best to) post a discussion of some moral question from a secular perspective. I don’t claim to speak for every atheist, but just to illustrate how this one atheist reasons through these questions. That’s why the discussion continues on in the comments!
